Is a Nursing Career Right For You?
Take The Free QuizWhat Are the Best Nursing Interventions for Heart Failure Patients?
What Are the Best Nursing Interventions for Heart Failure Patients?
Heart failure (HF), also known as congestive heart failure, occurs when the heart cannot supply blood to the body effectively. The left ventricle is the largest and does most of the pumping. Left-sided HF is characterized by a loss of contractility in the left ventricle, which makes it unable to pump properly. Here are night and weekend LPN programs (nursing programs) that help to learn the nursing intervention for heart failure patients.
Left-sided heart failure often leads to right-sided heart failure. If the right ventricle cannot pump blood properly, it can lead to right-sided heart failure. All organ systems will be affected if the heart cannot pump blood efficiently to the body.
Nursing Interventions for Heart Failure Patients
Nursing interventions for heart failure patients and patient care are essential for the patient’s recovery which is associated with clinical outcomes. You’ll find out more about nursing interventions that can be used for patients with heart failure in the next section.
Promote Perfusion
1. Make Sure the Blood Vessels Are Relaxed
Angiotensin-converting enzyme and antagonists of angiotensin II receptors (ARBs) enhance blood flow by relaxing artery walls. Also, it lowers blood tension and cardiac muscle strain.
2. Reduce Your Heart Rate and Blood Pressure
Beta-blockers can be used to lower blood pressure and heart rate. This will help your heart work more effectively.

3. Induce Diuresis
Diuretics increase urination to eliminate excess fluids from the body.
4. Consider Potassium-sparing Diuretics
Aldosterone antagonists, potassium-sparing diuretics, help treat systolic cardiac failure. It helps remove excess fluid from the body and heart.
5. Strengthen Heart Contraction
Inotropes can be given intravenously while in the hospital. These drugs are used to maintain blood pressure and increase the efficiency of the heart’s pumping.
Digoxin can increase the strength of heart contractions. Lab testing is a good way to monitor digoxin toxicity.
- The Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (CABG) creates an additional blood pathway in the heart. A bypass is built by using an artery taken from another part, like the leg.
- Heart valve replacement or repair fixes or replaces defective heart valves that cause heart failure.
- Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) is a treatment that uses a biventricular heart pacemaker to correct arrhythmias caused by electrical signals.
- The mechanical Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) are pumps that help improve the heart’s contraction and pumping when it is in heart failure.
- Patients with severe heart failure who have failed to respond to treatment are recommended a heart transplant.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
1. Work With Your Team
The patients will be working with cardiologists and cardiac rehab nurse specialists, dieticians, and social workers, as well as physical and occupational therapists to meet their needs.
2. Crease Your Tolerance to Physical Activity
Recovery will take some time after a heart procedure or surgery. In cardiac rehab, exercises are gradually introduced to strengthen the heart.
3. Strengthening the Patient’s Well-being
Cardiac rehabilitation improves the health and quality of life of the patient by helping them regain strength and prevent HF recurrences and complications.
Reduce the Risk of Complications
1. Regulate Your Heart Rhythm
Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are devices that prevent heart failure complications. ICD monitors the heart rhythm and maintains the regular heart rate if arrhythmia occurs.
2. Reiterate the Importance of Lifestyle Changes
By making lifestyle changes, you can prevent heart failure and reduce symptoms.
- Regular exercise
- Heart-healthy diet
- Smoking cessation
- Second-hand smoke: Avoiding it
- Stress management of patients
- Vaccinations
- Limiting alcohol consumption
- Sleep well
3. Advice on Activities
Regular aerobic exercise improves the heart function of people with heart disease. Patients with severe HF may find it difficult or even impossible to engage in physical activity. Encourage the patient to walk for 5 to 10 minutes at a slow pace and aim to increase this by one to two minutes per day.
4. Maintain a Healthy Body Weight
Overweight can lead to fatty deposits in the arteries. Limit trans or saturated fats. Weight loss improves blood pressure, cholesterol, and metabolic activity.
5. Encourage Patients to Adhere to Their Treatment
The continuity of care is enhanced by adherence to treatment. Patient adherence increases the effectiveness of HF treatment and prevents complications.
Guideline for Discharge and Homecare
The nurse should educate the patient and include them in the treatment regimen.
